Spring Lawn Mower Maintenance and Tune Up Tips
Lowe’s and the Home 101 team give you tips for maintaining your push mower to kick off the spring season.
If you didn’t do it in the fall, one of the first things you should do is replace your oil. Dirty oil can really mess up your engine, drastically limiting its performance. Draining out the old oil into a safe container and adding some fresh stuff really helps. Be sure to recycle old oil at a local recycling center.
You should regularly give your air filter a good cleaning as well. If it’s really dirty, toss it and get a new one – every two years or so is a good rule of thumb.
You should also swap out your mower’s spark plug on a regular basis – if you’re having trouble getting your engine going, an old sparkplug could be the culprit.
For this next step, make sure to detach the spark plug. With the mower on a tarp put a piece of heavy-duty plastic over the opening and screw the gas cap back on. Flip the mower over so that you can clean the blade.
Examine your blade closely. If it’s moderately dirty, you can clean it with a good wire brush. For really caked on stuff, you can use a putty knife or a paint scraper; if the blade is in really bad shape, you should probably get a new one, but make sure when you do this, you wear your gloves.
Then just spray a little lubricant at the blade’s rotation point.
Performing these simple steps will help your mower use less gas throughout the season.
