How to air seal attic electrical boxes– DIY home improvement tips– Rule Your Attic! With ENERGY STAR
In this Vine-style video learn how to identify electrical boxes in your attic and seal leaks around them using spray foam and insulation. By sealing these gaps you can save money, save energy, make your home more comfortable, and reduce the emissions that contribute to climate change. And, it’s easy to do yourself.
Here are the steps for air sealing electrical boxes in your attic:
1. For safety, you may want to turn off power going to the fixture that’s beneath the electrical box.
2. Carefully enter your attic (and use a piece of plywood across joists to safely walk or crawl around).
3. Push back any existing insulation around the box.
4. Look for gaps around the base of the box.
5. Using spray foam, carefully spray the foam into the gaps around the box. You may want to also spray foam into holes within the box itself as air can leak from those holes. Let foam dry and cure for at least 30 minutes.
6. Move existing insulation back into place over the dried foam.
7. If necessary, turn your power back on.
8. You’re done with this step! Now there are a couple of other things you can do to improve your home’s energy efficiency:
